Not too often do I have a desire to listen to a ‘celebrity’ figure talk about issues that are important to them. Why? Not to be snobbish, but mainly because what you usually get is an earful of them degrading a certain group of people, why they hate so and so, the reasons why the world is a mess because of the people they don’t like and on and on. Usually, it’s a personal agenda that turns me off the moment it starts – so I wasn’t sure exactly how the book, ON THE MOVE BY BONO would bode with me.
I admit, I expected the norm: I hate Christians, Republicans, President Bush and the issue I am passionate about stems from the existence of the three groups of people mentioned above.
I am glad to say, that Bono proved me wrong and I enjoyed his book and thought it was an inspiring compilation of words and portraits of life.
ON THE MOVE is simply the words taken from the speech that Bono delivered at the 2006 National Prayer Breakfast. For the first time I can honestly say that a celebrity used their status for good, for a cause, not a personal agenda on the level most do. Bono delivered this speech with an obvious passion for Africa and the many troubling issues going on in that country. His desire to bring change to that nation may be personal, but he in no way used that day as a platform to attack or divide. He used it to inform and educate those attending. He degraded nobody. He sternly pointed his finger at nobody. He neither blamed nor cursed the Christian population. He didn’t derail any political group. He didn’t degrade our President and Commander in Chief. Instead, he brought about a plea for people to listen.
After reading this book, his speech, it’s clear to see he has heart and earnest desire to make a mark on the nation of Africa. He’s one of few, famous or otherwise, who is willing to give of himself to help a people burdened and oppressed. He noted that we can do more together, than we can apart – and he is right.
It only takes a few minutes to read, but the words and photos accompanying the words will definitely leave an impression on you. This book and his speech will make you stop and think for a moment that there is more to our lives than the normal day to day we engage in every time the sun comes up until the sun goes down.
Take a moment to read this book and see a view of events going on and people living on this earth that you may never encounter on your own. If you feel passionate about the same issues that Bono speaks of, get involved in his organization and make a difference right along side thousands of others.
