baklava

4 cups walnuts, crushed
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ½ tsp allspice
- 1 cup melted butter, real
- ½ lb filo dough

SYRUP:

- 1 ½ cups sugar
- 1 cup water
- 5 whole cloves
- 1 cinnamon stick
- ½ cup honey
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp vanilla

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Combine walnuts, sugar, cinnamon and allspice.
Trim filo dough to 15 ½ " x 10" (cover with damp cloth to prevent drying). Brush pan with melted butter - sprinkle 1 ½ cups walnut mixture. Add a filo dough sheet and butter the top. Repeat those steps until out of the walnut mixture. Top with 6 filo dough sheets, butter each layer. Trim with knife, cut in diamond shape on top 1 ½ " of dough.


Bake 50-60 minutes.

For syrup: mix sugar, water, clove, and cinnamon stick in medium pan and simmer approximately 2 minutes. Add honey and lemon juice and simmer another 5 minutes.

Remove from heat. Remove the cloves and cinnamon sticks and stir in the vanilla. Spoon syrup over the Baklava, after Baklava is done baking, while the Baklava is warm, not hot.
